Past Performers

Here's a list of some of our past performers.

One of the Sonoma Valley Jazz Society's best performances was done weekly for years by Norm Anderson who's work has enabled the Jazz Society to thrive. Thanks Norm we will miss you!

A dear friend and fellow music lover, Norm Anderson, of Sonoma, died peacefully on June 12, 2007 at the age of 73, after a long illness.

Norm adored life, his wonderful friends and his loving family, and always kept these things his priority above anything else.

Norm made special contributions to advertising, music and art. He began his advertising career in 1960, and eventually owned his own successful agency. After a long career, Norm moved to Sonoma nearly 20 years ago to begin a new chapter in his life. He opened an art gallery, Madison Avenue Art, in downtown Sonoma featuring fine arts by commercial artists. Norm was also the vice president of the Sonoma Jazz Society and a dispatcher for FISH (Friends In Sonoma Helping).

Memorial contributions can be sent in his name to the Sonoma Jazz Society or FISH.

MEET THE MUSICIANS SUNDAY SALON

The Sonoma Valley Jazz Society in partnership with the Sonoma Community Center, invited you to come meet some of Sonoma's great jazz personalities. This was a chance to meet, listen to, and ask questions of the musicians.  How did they get started? Who was the most fun to work with? Who is the best musican you have worked with? Here's is your chance to find out. The Musicians included vocalist Dana Land, Guitarist Brian Nova and pianist Dick Conte (Pictured w/ Steve Webber, bass)

This series took place January through March, 2008, and was a such a success we were able to bring it back again in 2009.

What are people saying about our Sunday Salon - Meet the Musicians?

From Virginia Hubbell, Sonoma, CA

Dear Sonoma Valley Jazz Society,

I was fortunate to attend the Society's Sunday Salon, Jazz at the Community Center event on February 24th. Brian Nova was the featured artist. I want to write to express my gratitude for sponsoring this venue. It was, in a word, fantastic. I have lived in Sonoma for 30 years, and been involved with numerous Bay Area jazz events, both as a jazz fan, and as a funder, both professionally as a philanthropist, and personally. Over the years I've had the opportunity to witness concerts and events of many Bay Area jazz programs, including those of SF Jazz, and the recent concerts of Sonoma Jazz. I only wish they would add similar venues like this Sunday Salon. The big concerts are great, but this intimate setting, with a brilliant high quality artist like Brian Nova who has such skill, both musically, and as a raconteur and teacher, really made a strong impact. It was so personal. I felt like I had been specially selected to be in the close presence of greatness. It also made me glad I live in Sonoma and don't have to drive to other places to experience the up close and personal.

This type of venue is a real gift, and has the opportunity to help raise funds for the Society and those programs associated with it.

Keep up the creative and wonderful work.

Sincerely,

Virginia Hubbell

 JAZZ FOR KELLY
In 2005 Kelly Corliss, age 26, suffered a massive brain stem stroke, which left him totally paralyzed. On March 10th, 2006 The SVJS held a benefit concert featuring Grammy nominated International Cuban Jazz Pianist Omar Sosa. The event raised over $10k for Kelly's ongoing medical expenses.

Featuring

This concert  was held at the Sonoma Valley Women’s Club on 574 First Street East, April 19, 2007.  The intimate setting was filled with the most amazing music.

Omar Sosa and his Afreecanos band was “Completely Masterful” The melodic intricacies, with hearty substance of a home cooked meal or a warm blanket on a cold night. Enthralling!
