Larry Vuckovich is a distinctive voice in modern jazz piano, blending bebop fire, European lyricism, world-music color, and deep blues feeling. Born in 1936 in Kotor, he discovered jazz through Armed Forces Radio, finding in it a sense of freedom after his family faced post-war political persecution. Granted asylum in 1951, they resettled in San Francisco.
There, he absorbed influences from Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Dizzy Gillespie, and Bill Evans, studying under Vince Guaraldi, who featured him in performance and connected him with leading vocalists. By his early twenties, he became Mel Tormé’s first-call pianist.
Vuckovich went on to tour and record internationally with artists like Jon Hendricks and Philly Joe Jones, performing at major European festivals and iconic venues. Known for moving fluidly across bebop, modal jazz, blues, and global styles, he has earned critical praise for his originality, with standout recordings including Something Special, High Wall, Street Scene, and Blue Balkan.
